ALAMOSA, Colo.—With her three-point shot in the second quarter, Adams State University senior
Stephanie Ruiz hit a key milestone on Tuesday evening inside Plachy Hall as she scored her 750th point of her career. She scored a team-high 20 points in the game to help the Grizzlies defeat Northern New Mexico College 83-54 in a non-conference game.
Adams State shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the field in the first half as Ruiz scored eight points in the first quarter before she scored six in the second quarter. The Grizzlies led 21-11 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 43-30 at the break.
Adams State held the Eagles to 12 points in each the third and fourth quarters.
Adams State saw three players in double figures as
Laura Gutierrez scored 18 points and
Kayla Harris scored 11. All Grizzly players except one player scored in the game
As a team Adams State shot 50 percent from the field as they were 29-of-58. They were 9-of-20 (45 percent) from beyond the arch. Ruiz hit five three-pointers in the game to tie her career best, set back in 2018.
Adams State, now 1-2 on the season, will have a ten-day break before they return to action at the 2021 Holiday Inn-Airport Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa University next Friday and Saturday. They are set to take on Montana Western on Friday and SAGU American Indian College. Both games are scheduled to start at noon.
