FORT HAYS, Kan.—The Adams State University wrestling team placed five of their six competing wrestlers at the 2021 FHSU-Bob Smith Open on Sunday (Dec. 12), including two individual champions in
Isaiah De La Cerda (125) and
Jonathan Andreatta (133).
De La Cerda, who is ranked No. 7, won all four of his matches and reached the championship bout of the 125-pound bracket as he earned an injury default over Carl Albert State's Jaxson Roney in 5:00, earned a 12-0 major decision over Fort Hays State's Rhett Koppes, and earned a 15-0 technical fall over Dominick Castro. In the championship match, De La Cerda earned a 7-1 decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Bishop Murray.
Andreatta, who is also ranked No. 7, also finished 4-0 on the day as he reached the title match by defeating Labette's Kardan Lee via an 18-0 technical fall before earning a pin over Hasting's Kavilka Ahoelelei in 2:48. The final match before the championship match was a tech fall, 16-0, over CSU Pueblo's Devin Lueck. In the title match, Andreatta earned a fall in 3:21 over Caleb Tanner.
At 141 pounds,
Cael Figueroa placed sixth as he lost is first match with a fall in six minutes to Central Oklahoma's Peter Rolle. He then won an 8-4 decision over Labette's Gage Hight and moved to the fifth-place match after falling to Pratt Community College's Jacob Mitchell via an 8-0 major decision. In the fifth-place match he fell to Air Force Prep's Bryce Shelton by a score of 9-4.
Also at 141 pounds,
Grayson LeCompte dropped both his matches.
At 174 pounds,
Cody Lewis finished in fifth place. He dropped his first match via a 9-5 decision, rallied in his next two matches to win by tech fall over Central Oklahoma's Ben Parkhurst and a 5-3 decision over Newman's JD Johnson. He lost his consolation semifinal before downing Fort Hays State's Aidan Johnson in a forfeit for the fifth place.
Hunter Tobiasson finished in third place at 197 pounds. He dropped his opening match by a narrow 5-4 decision before winning his next four matches. He earned a 18-2 technical fall, a 10-1 major decision, a fall in 1:22 and won the third-place match with a fall in 1:16.
The Grizzlies will wrap up before winter break as they travel to Indianapolis for the 42nd Midwest Classic on Saturday (Dec. 18) and Sunday (Dec. 19) with action beginning at 9 a.m. CT (8 a.m. MT).
