ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies will open conference this weekend against New Mexico Highlands and University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
The Grizzlies are coming off of a win against SAGU American Indian College this past weekend. The Grizzlies put on a show as they won 91-55. As a team the Grizzlies forced 30 turnovers, outrebounded AIC by 25, collect 23 steals, and were able to get great minutes from everyone available to play.
Adams State had few key players come off the bench and put on a great performance. Taylor Dossey, a junior transfer had her career-high of 17 points,
Nicole Brown had 12 points, freshman guard
Savreena Rael had 9, and freshman forward
Feleena Candelaria had 12 rebounds. This was an excellent win for the Grizzlies that made their overall record going into conference, 2-3. This is the best record going into to the regular season that the Grizzlies have had in over three years.
The first conference foe for the Grizzlies is New Mexico Highlands. Due to COVID-19, the Cowgirls weren't able to compete last season, so the most previous matchup was back in 2019. The Grizzlies were victorious as they came back in the second half to get the win, 57-45. Overall, against the Cowboys at home the Grizzlies are 10-5. The Cowboys are heading into conference with a 3-3 record and are also coming off of a last-minute win against Northern New Mexico College. Two key returners for New Mexico Highlands is Jordyn Lewis and Maiah Rivas. Lewis leads the team in scoring with an average of 11.8 points per game and Rivas is averaging 9.8 points. Together they control most of the offense for the Cowboys.
After facing New Mexico Highlands, the Grizzlies will take on another conference foe whom they didn't play against last season due to COVID 19. University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will be traveling to Plachy Hall on Saturday, December 4th. In the last matchup between the two, the Mountain Lions were victorious as they won 69-54. The Mountain Lions are starting the regular season off as 2-4 as they recently beat Friends University, 68-54 and University of the Southwest, 89-67. A new player for the Mountain Lions who has made an immediate impact is graduate student transfer, Jasmine Jeffcoat. She averages 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and has 8 assists so far. Trailing behind her as the second leading scorer on the team is Maison White. As a freshman, White is averaging 10.5 points and 8 rebounds.
Up next for the Grizzlies is Colorado State University Pueblo on Tuesday, December 7th, in Pueblo, then the Grizzlies will travel to Rapid City, South Dakota to play South Dakota Mines on Saturday, December 11th.
