ALAMOSA, Colo.—In an intense match, the Adams State Women's Basketball team returned to action on their home court. The Grizzlies played remarkably as they took the lead early on in the match and won against Fort Lewis College 70-55, setting them at 3-7 on the season.
Adams State looked good from the beginning of the first quarter,
Elaina Watson scored the first points of the game, within ten-seconds of the tipoff.
Kayla Harris made a layup off a
Angelline Nageak feed creating an opportunity for the Grizzlies take the lead. The Skyhawks and Grizzlies took turns taking the lead, but a shot made by Harris set Adams State back in the lead 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Adams State maintained their lead in the beginning of the second quarter as
Laura Gutierrez made a 3-pointer, which put the Grizzlies in a four-point lead. Gutierrez changed the dynamic of the game, setting the tone for the rest of her teammates to follow as they worked hard to build up the lead. The Grizzlies were very sharp reaching for the rebounds, setting up good scoring opportunities, ending the second quarter with a nine-point lead.
In the second half the Grizzlies held their ground, blowing away the Skyhawks as they continued to extend their lead. Adams State found their rhythm and kept the momentum going, as the Skyhawks try to close the lead.
Elaina Watson had a good play assisted by
Kaela McClure setting the Grizzlies in a 17-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
Adams State held the lead in the last quarter, and with final shot made by
Stephanie Ruiz the Grizzlies defeat the Skyhawks.
Adams State was led by
Laura Gutierrez with 18 points as she set a career high in field goals made at seven, also scoring in the double digits was
Kayla Harris, who had 11 points, and
Elaina Watson 10 points.
The Grizzlies will be back on the court later on this week on Friday Feb. 19, they will travel to Durango, Colo. where they will meet up again with Fort Lewis College with the tipoff scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
