WBB | Grizzlies, Demps capture Senior Day win over Regis

ALAMOSA, Colo.—A career night for Adams State University lone senior Paiton Demps helped lift the Grizzlies to a 76-69 win over the Regis Rangers in their season-finale which dubbed as Senior Night inside Plachy Hall on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies, who finish the 2021 campaign with a 4-10 overall and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record, finished the regular season in tenth place in the standings. This year the standings are decided by RPI and the Grizzlies finished with a 9.79 rating. Regis, who finished the regular season with an 8-9 overall record, clinched the eighth seed with an 11.56 RPI ranking.

The Grizzlies opened an early first quarter lead thanks in part to a 7-0 run and a 6-of-11 shooting performance from the field. They kept the pressure up as they took a 23-16 lead into the second frame.

The Grizzlies then went cold in the second quarter as Regis outscored them 20-9 in the second quarter hitting just 4-of-17 points from the field.

With the Grizzlies trailing 36-32 at the break, the Grizzlies rallied in the third and hit three three-pointers in en route to nine field goals to recapture the lead, 53-50, headed into the final stanza.

The fourth quarter saw Adams State hit 8-of-17 from the field to close out the game with the four-point advantage and the win.

Demps, who set a new career-high 16 points, was joined by Laura Gutierrez, who also tallied 16 points, and Stephanie Ruiz, who scored 11 points, to break double-digits in the game.

As a team, Adams State converted on 31-of-72 from the field and 11-of-32 from the field. Despite being called for 19 personal fouls to Regis' 12, Adams State still won as they hit 3-of-5 from the charity stripe. Regis was 8-of-11.
