GUNNISON, Colo.— 500 days, nearly to the whistle, since their last game, the Adams State University Women's soccer team finally hit the pitch for a game on Tuesday afternoon here in Gunnison. The Grizzlies helped the Western Colorado University Mountaineers christen the highest collegiate soccer field in the world at 7,723 feet, Katy O. Rady Field.
What better way than to have the two highest soccer programs in the nation playing at the highest field and the Grizzlies opened the season with a 1-0 win over the Mountaineers.
After Adams State mustered the only first two shots of the game in the first half, a 0-0 score is what both teams took to the half.
The Grizzlies broke the ice in the 69th minute as sophomore forward
Carena Harrison battled through a defender and the Mountaineer goalkeeper for the first goal of the season. Redshirt junior
Ashley Beers was the goalkeeper of record as she made three saves and in her first career start she earned her first career shutout.
The Grizzlies will host Fort Lewis for their home-opener on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field. The game will be the final preseason game before the Grizzlies open conference action at CSU Pueblo on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
