PUEBLO, Colo.—The Adams State University Grizzly softball team did what they needed to do on Saturday afternoon here at the Rawlings Softball Complex as they were able to defeat the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves in both games of the twin bill.
Game 1: Adams State 5, CSU Pueblo 1
Behind stellar defensive plays and an 2-for-2 performance at the plate for designated player
Belinda Vargas that included two home runs and three RBI, Adams State was able to come away with a 5-1 win over the ThunderWolves in the first game.
The game looked like it was going to be a hard day as the first three batter for the Grizzlies went down via strikeouts. However, Vargas had other plans as she took the fourth pitch of her first at bat and nailed a laser that narrowly cleared the ten-foot centerfield fence.
Sydney Muniz then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0 entering the third inning.
The ThunderWolves were able to score a single run in the third inning.
The fourth inning was off to a bang as
Jade Garbiso hit a triple before Vargas hit another laser to right field that cleared the wall for her second homer and gave the Grizzlies a 4-1 lead. The final run was scored by
Amaya Turner in the fourth inning as she reached on a fielding error.
In the game the Grizzlies tallied five hits and had no defensive errors while the ThunderWolves had five hits and two errors.
Despite the top three batters in the Grizzly line up going just 1-for-12 with five strikeouts, the defense came up big and stranded seven ThunderWolf runners on the base paths.
Jade Garbiso got her fourth win of the season as she faced 29 batters in the complete game. She allowed the lone run on five hits and four walks while getting one strikeout.
Game 2: Adams State 3, CSU Pueblo 2
Tayler Duncan became the player of the day in the second game as she came out of the bullpen and, even though she made it dicey, she shut down the ThunderWolves and stranded five runners on the base paths in the final 1.2 innings of work. She earned a hard fought save as she allowed no hits or walks to keep a narrow 3-2 win.
With
Jasmine Garbiso, who earned her fifth win of the season, holding the ThunderWolves hitless until the fourth inning,
Tyler Hays took the first pitch she saw of the fourth inning or a ride as she hit a laser out of the park for a 1-0 lead.
The ThunderWolves scratched the tying run across in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly before
Jade Garbiso hit a two-run home run to make the score 3-1. CSU Pueblo attempted to tie the game in the sixth as they loaded the bases but only got one.
