CHADRON, Neb.—The No. 7/ No. 13 ranked Adams State University Wrestling team fell to 1-1 in duals this season and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Thursday night when the Chadron State College Eagles used a forfeit at heavyweight to clinch a 23-17 win, inside the Chicoine Center.
Adams State, ranked No. 7 in the latest InterMat Wrestling rankings and No. 13 in the latest NWCA poll, won five matches with the decisive factor in the dual being the forfeit for the Grizzlies at 285 points, the only six-point match of the night.
The dual started at 185 pounds, where freshman Ben Tonnessen took on Rowdy Pfeil. Pfeil quickly got a takedown and two near-fall points. He added four points before two minutes elapsed and earned a 16-0 technical fall as the period ended for a 5-0 lead.
At 197, No. 8 ranked
Hunter Tobiasson used his brute strength to jump out to an 11-3 lead after one period, thanks in part to three takedowns. Eli Hinojoso had an early second-period takedown to erase any riding time and take a 39-second advantage heading into the final period. Tobiasson earned a reversal, but Hinojosa kept the match interesting late but could not overcome the lead as Tobiasson reached the 14-12 decision to close the team score to 5-3.
Chadron State's lead increased to 11-3 via a forfeit at 285 pounds.
Senior
Isaiah De La Cerda, ranked No. 7 at 125 pounds, downed freshman Quade Smith despite Smith getting a first-period takedown. The score was 2-1 after the first period. De La Cerda tied the match in the second with an escape with 30 seconds remaining. De La Cerda got an early third-period takedown. Smith earned a reversal before De La Cerda got the escape with just over a minute left. De La Cerda then took complete control of the match in the final 30 seconds for the 11-4 decision and closing the team gap fall to 11-6.
At 133, Jimmizan Redhorse and Colter Julian traded takedowns and escapes in the first period, but Julian led 11-5. The second period saw a little action as Julian maintained his lead at 16-8. Julian got a 24-9 technical fall in 6:38 seconds to see the team lead grow back to ten, 16-6.
Cael Figueroa battled early with Ethan Leake at 141 pounds. Leake was able to get a takedown and two near fall points to lead 4-0 entering the second period. Leake added six points in the second before securing the 15-2 major decision. The team score grew to 20-6.
Adams State countered with three straight wins, including two major decisions to pull within three, 20-17.
Noah Hermosillo and Brody Lamb had a flurry of action in the middle of the first with a reversal and near fall points. Despite the close match early, Hermosillo jumped out to a 12-5 lead after one period. Hermosillo grew the lead to 15-6 after two. Hermosillo earned the 18-7 major decision.
No. 7 ranked
Josiah Rider took an early 4-0 lead over Dean Neff at 157 pounds. He ended up shutting out Neff as he earned a 10-0 major decision to close the team match to 20-14.
Samuel Loera, who went a perfect 6-0 last week, and Preston Renner locked up in a stalemate in the first period at 165 pounds. Both wrestlers traded escapes before Loera earned the win with a take down with 12 seconds left to close the team lead to 20-17.
The final match of the day, a 174-pound match up between
Cody Lewis and Darwin Hull was a nailbiter early with Hull earning an early 9-3 lead. Lewis saw the riding time grow in the second but the lead of six points stayed entering the third. Lewis pulled within three points and had two stalling penalty points but ultimately lost 10-11.
The Grizzlies will have very little rest time as they are set to take on the No. 17 ranked team in the NWCA poll, Colorado School of Mines, at 6:00 p.m. inside Volk Gymnasium in Golden, Colo. Masks are required to attend the dual. Individually, Friday's dual will feature five nationally ranked wrestlers, although none are slated to wrestle head-to-head in the projected lineups. Mines has No. 9 Anderson Salisbury at 184 and No. 4 Weston Hunt at 285 pounds.
