PUEBLO – Adams State's wrestling team rallied for a 26-13 win over Colorado State University-Pueblo in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Jan. 19.
The Grizzlies improve to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in conference meets. The ThunderWolves suffered their first loss of the season in three starts and are 0-1 in the RMAC.
The Grizzlies won the last five matches of the dual meet to pull out the win. The rally started at 149 pounds. ASU's
Noah Hermosillo picked up a tough, 3-2 decision over the ThunderWolves' Gavin Melendez. The winning escape came early in the second period. Hermosillo had to survive a single-leg attack halfway through the third period and overcome a stalling warning to earn the win..
At 157 pounds,
Josiah Rider of the Grizzlies used a six-point scoring combination in the first period to move on to a 11-6 decision over Ruben Garcia of the Thunderwolves. The Grizzlies' Samuel Loera earned a 7-3 decision over Justin Davis of CSU-Pueblo at 165 pounds. Loera took the lead for good with 1:13 left in the third period with a takedown. Davis picked up an escape late in the match, but Loera was able to survive a couple of late shots and earned his last two points as time ran out in the match.
At 174 pounds, ASU's
Cody Lewis had the easiest match within the rally. He pinned Remngton Winmil of the T-wolves in 3:09. And at 184 pounds, Ben Tonnessen of the Grizzlies needed to go into overtime to beat the ThunderWolves' Dominic Robles 3-1. The two traded escapes in the second and third periods. Tonnessen got the game-winning, double-leg takedown with 41 seconds left in the match.
ASU started with a win at 197 pounds.
Hunter Tobiasson beat Ben Gould of CSU-Pueblo by a 6-1 score. Tobiasson was in control throughout the match. Gould's most serious attempt to mount an offense came in the second period. But Tobiasson was able to ward off the maneuver and went on to the win.
The Grizzlies' next win came at 133 pounds, and it was an easy victory for
Jonathan Andreatta. He won by technical fall (16-0) over Devin Lueck of the ThunderWolves. Andreatta earned back points on four successive maneuvers to win going away.
Elsewhere, CSU-Pueblo's Gavin Nye had things going his way against ASU's
Aiden Butler in the 285-pound match. Nye turned a takedown into a pinning combination and won the match by pinfall in 4:05. At 125 pounds, Parker McBride of CSU-Pueblo got the winning takedown with 53 seconds left to beat the Grizzlies' Isaiah DeLaCerda 4-3.
The ThunderWolves' Cyrus Meeks broke open a close, 141-pound match late in the second period against
Cael Figueroa of Adams State. Meeks scored nine of the last 11 points – he also picked up a point for riding time – and earned a 15-7 decision victory.
Adams State will be back in action Saturday when they compete at the UNK Midwest Duals.
