GUNNISON, Colo.—A day after hosting their first home dual in nearly 700 days saw the Adams State University wrestling team send 11 wrestlers to the Western Colorado Open in Gunnison on Friday. Buoyed by an individual championship at 165 pounds by Sanuel Loera, the Grizzlies had five finishers place in the top four of their respective brackets.
 
Loera, who opened up the week with a 14-4 major decision on Thursday in a dual win over New Mexico Highlands, went 5-0 on the day at the Western Colorado Open. He scored 27.5 team points as he won the first match, a 7-0 decision over Tanner Tsinigine. He earned a 16-0 tech fall over NMHU's Miguel Lara, a 14-1 major decision over CSU Pueblo's Tytus Cooms, a 5-4 decision over Colorado Mesa's Augustus Dalton and wrapped up the individual crown with a 7-2 decision over Western's James Parana.
 
Adam Concepcion finished in fourth place at 125 pounds and scored 2.5 points as he went 1-3 overall with a tech fall over Western's Binyam Barila.
 
Jimmizan Redhorse and Miguel Sanchez represented the Grizzlies at 133 pounds with Redhorse falling to Sanchez in the opening match up in the bracket via a 7-4 decision. Redhorse went 1-3 overall while Sanches placed seventh and went 2-2 overall
 
Dale Van Matre and Cael Figueroa wrestled in the 141-bracket with Van Matre went 1-3 with his lone win being a 3-1 decision over Figueroa, who went 0-4 on the day.
 
At 149 pounds, Travis Vilapando finished in fifth place as he won two of his matches including a sudden victory match over CSU Pueblo's Anthony Nichols in the opening round. He won a major decision over Western's Jacob McCarley in the third round.
 
Adams State had three wrestlers, Hunter Smith, Dominic Helbok and AJ Van Matre, in the 157-pound bracket, with Van Matre being the best finisher of the three with a second-place finish. He won the first three matches before falling in the final match.
 
Abraham Garcia rounded out the Grizzly finishers with a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds. He went 1-3 overall with his win being a 10-8 decision over Colorado Mesa's Raul Martinez.
