VB | Adams State Wins Again in Sweep Over South Dakota Mines

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Two was the operative number this afternoon as Adams State won its second-straight match today over South Dakota Mines, taking each set by two points in a 25-23, 26-24, 27-25 sweep in which Cindy Garcia notched match-high kill honors for the second time in as many contests.

The Grizzlies hit a sizzling .288 while limiting their attack errors to just 16, with Anna Huggins (12) and Natalie Gallegos (10) again bolstering the offensive attack with double-figure putaways as ASU improved to 8-14 overall and 5-9 in RMAC action.

Both teams kept pace with the other to open the match until ASU took control at 9-6 after a solo stuff by Kendal O'gilvie.

The Grizzlies' lead over the Hardrockers reached as high as four at 19-15 after a Mines attack error, only to have the visitors knot the set with four-straight points.

ASU, however, replied with four points of its own to take a 24-19 lead, eventually putting SDM away on a Garcia hammer.

The hosts used that momentum to take an early 4-1 lead in set two, maintaining that 3-point edge midway through the set and pushing it to six at 18-16 after another Garcia kill and Hardrocker misfire.

SDM, however, clawed back to tie the set four times starting at 20-20, until two final Garcia blasts put the finishing touches on the two-point win.

The visitors looked to get back into the match after intermission after taking an early 5-3 lead until a pair of attacker errors put the Grizzles up 7-6.

Tied at 10-10, ASU ran off four-straight points behind two O'gilvie kills, a SDM error, and a flush by Garcia to push its edge to five points at 18-13 on another Hardrocker error.

SDM, however, used a 10-5 run to catch the Grizzlies at 23-23, setting up a fantastic finish.

After splitting the next four points, Huggins took her turn to finish off the pesky visitors, tallying her 11th and 12th kills of the match to end the contest and give ASU its second-straight win.

Huggins added four solo stuffs to her statline with Aileen Bugas saving 14 balls and Sierra Leon Sanchez tallying 23 assists to pace ASU in those categories.

The Grizzlies travel to New Mexico Highlands University on Tuesday, October 25, to take on the Cowboys for a 6 pm first serve.
