WXC | Grizzlies aim for third straight XC championship

SEATTLE, Wash.—There is always history waiting to be written and Friday at 12:15 MT/11:15 PT, at Chambers Creek Regional Park in University Place, Wash., the Adams State University Grizzly women's cross country team will look to just do that. The Damon Martin-coached squad is on the cusp of being the first team in NCAA Division II women's cross country history to win three straight national titles two separate times.

Only three other teams have won three straight titles since the association started women's championships in 1982. Cal Poly won the first ten straight titles before Adams State entered the NCAA in 1992 and they roared in as they won the first eight straight titles they could from 1992-1999. Western Colorado won three straight from 2012-14.

On Friday, during the NCAA Division II Fall Championships Festival, the Grizzlies will see a squad of four juniors, three sophomores and one freshman toe the starting line.

The juniors are Stephanie Cotter, Nicole Lawrence, Precious Robinson and Brianna Robles.

Cotter, who helped the Grizzlies to the NCAA DII title in Sacramento, Calif. in 2019, returns to the Grizzlies after a year away and looks to return to her performance level as 2019. In that race, she broke the all-time performance record of the women's 6K in Division II and won the individual title, with a time of 19:15.5. Her season best is 20:45.8 at the RMAC Championships.

Nicole Lawrence's season best came on Oct. 15 in California when she posted a 20:50.5. Robinson posted her best time at the Highlander Invitational as well as she had a 20:03.9 at that race.

Robles is none to new to the national spotlight as she, like Cotter in 2020, won both the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter titles.

The sophomores are Amalia Dorian, Morgan Hykes and Emily Schoellkopf while the RMAC Freshman of the Year, Maggie McCleskey, is the lone freshman.

Coach Martin enters the meet after being named the South-Central Region Women's Coach of the Year earlier this week.
