GOLDEN, Colo.— The 2022-23 Adams State University wrestling season began on Sunday at the Colorado School of Mines Rookie Open. The Grizzlies had one champion and one third place finish during the tournament.
The Grizzly's champion was Ben Tonnessen who had four straight falls to win the 197 pound title. He earned a :37 fall over Colorado Mesa's Braden Baumgatner, a 2:53 fall over NMHU's Zeke Borunda, a 2:25 fall over Western Colorado's Dante Pallone and a 1:29 fall over Gavin Dodge of Northwest Kansas Technical.
At 125 pounds, Adam Concepcion represented the Grizzlies and, although going 0-2 on the day, made good strides.
Jimmizan Redhorse and Jack Faczak were at 133 pounds and after losing the first match of the day, Faczack won his next match with a fall in 1:11 before dropping a close 5-3 decision.
The Grizzlies saw Dale Van Matre dominate his way to the championship match with two major decisions, one tech fall and one fall before he fell to Grayston DiBlasi of Colorado School of Mines. Cael Figueroa also wrestled in the bracket and went 0-2.
At 149 pounds, Dylan Pickering won his first match by a 4-3 decision before dropping to the fifth-place bracket. He won two other matches to end his day.
Travis Vialpando won his first two matches with falls at 1:46 and 1:22, and earning another in 1:34 to finish in third.
At 157 pounds, Dominic Helbok dropped his first match before dropping winning two matches.
At 174 pounds, Diego Duarte dropped a 3-2 decision before dropping a 9-3 decision.
