INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the second time in his career,
Noah Hermosillo emerged as a champion at the 43rd Midwest Classic on Sunday. Hermosillo, who won the 157-pound title, was joined by two other placers.
Brendon Garcia, who finished second at 125 and
Josiah Rider, who finished third at 149 pounds.
As a team, the No. 13 ranked Grizzlies finished in eighth place in the 41-team field with 66 points. They were the second RMAC team in the top ten as Colorado Mesa finished fourth with 87.5 points.
Hermosillo, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, remained undefeated over the weekend by going 5-0 and scored 24 points. He earned a 8-3 decision over No. 5 ranked Dominic Means of Gannon. He capped of the tournament with a 13-3 decision over No. 9 ranked Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma.
At 125 pounds,
Brendon Garcia, who is unranked, finished the tournament 4-1 and scored 17 points as he didn't compete in the title bout due to injury.
He opened the tournament with a 4-2 decision over No. 10 Christian Mejia before earning a hard-fought 7-6 win over No. 7 ranked Studd Morrison from Central Oklahoma.
At 149 pounds, No. 6
Josiah Rider went 5-1 and scored 15.5 points to take third. En route to his third-place finish, he defeated No. 5 ranked, RMAC-foe Jason Hanenberg of Western Colorado via an 8-2 decision. He than defeated No. 2 Darick Lapaglia of Central Missouri thanks to a 10-2 decision. Rider than made easier work of Hanenberg in the third-place match as he won 15-3.
Other wrestlers that represented the Grizzlies were Dale Van Matre, who went 1-2 and scored two points at 133 pounds, while
Kieran Thompson went 1-2 at 141 pounds and scored 1.5 points.
Cody Lewis went 0-2 after a medical forfeit at 165 pounds while Damuel Loera went 1-2 at 174 points.
Hunter Tobiasson went 3-2 and scored four points at 184 pounds and Ben Tonnessen went 2-2 and scored two points at 197 pounds.
