WBB | Grizzlies attempt to clinch first playoff spot in 11 years

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies are on the road for their last regular season games as they attempt to clinch their first postseason berth since the 2010-11 season. The Grizzlies will take on No. 20 Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Regis University on Saturday

Adams State enters the weekend sitting in eighth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) needing just a single win to clinch a playoff spot, but also with an opportunity to move up to the seventh seed in the tournament.

Adams State has a overall record of 12-13 while sitting 10-10 in RMAC play. Adams State is on a three-game win streak which includes three home victories against Westminster (71-63), Fort Lewis (58-56) and Western Colorado (61-49).

Individually, Kayla Harris leads Adams State in most statistical categories thanks to 9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. Harris also hands out 1.7 assists and blocks 1.0 shots per game. As a team, the Grizzlies rank No. 10 in the nation in total steals and No.8 in steals per game.

The Grizzlies first stop this weekend is Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colorado. Here they will be playing the top team in conference. The Orediggers are currently 22-4 overall and 17-3 in conference.  In the last matchup between the two teams, the Grizzlies lost to the Orediggers by five, 57-52. The Grizzlies are on a 12-game losing streak against the Orediggers

Leading the charge for the Orediggers on the offensive end is Denali Pinto who is averaging 13.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and is 35.5 percent from the field. On the defensive end is senior guard/forward Sammy Van Sickle. Van Sickle has been named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week seven times this season. She is averaging seven rebounds, 2.7 steals, and is 41.4 percemt from the three-point line.

The Rangers are currently 11-15 overall and are 7-13 in conference. In the last matchup against the Grizzlies, the Rangers lost by six points, 68-62. Furthermore, last season the Grizzlies played against Regis at Plachy Hall on senior night clinched a late victory. 

 Leading the Rangers is Ryan Josey who is averaging 12.6 points, is 32.9 percent from the three-point line, and 3.2 rebounds. Helping her is Tashika Burrell who is averaging 9.7 points, 3 rebounds, and is 35.1 percent from the field. Just like last season, the Grizzlies are looking to finish the regular season with a win against the Regis Rangers.

Should the Grizzlies get a win, their next action will be the 2022 RMAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Grizzlies would have a first-round road game which will be played on Tuesday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. The opponent is yet to be determined and will be announced by conference officials on Sunday.
