ALAMOSA, Colo.—One of the most anticipated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) wrestling duals of the season proved to be a nail bitter on Friday night inside Plachy Hall. The No. 14 ranked Grizzlies were close but the No. 16 ranked Mavericks sealed a narrow win over the Grizzlies, 23-12.
The dual started at 125 pounds as No. 5 ranked Dawson Collins of Colorado Mesa and No. 9
Isaiah De La Cerda of Adams State locked up and big bout but Collins came away with a narrow 5-2 decision to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
At 133 pounds, No. 10 ranked
Jonathan Andreatta picked up a good win over No. 7 ranked Collin Metzgar with a 7-5 decision to tie the match up at three.
At 141 pounds,
Angel Flores of Adams State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning before Erik Contreras pulled out an escape to start the third period. Contreras got a takedown midway through the third period to take a 3-1 lead that he would not relinquish. His 3-1 win gave the Mavericks a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth match.
At 149 pounds, No. 4 ranked
Noah Hermosillo fell behind to Nick Gallegos early. The lead did not last as Hermosillo used two escapes and takedown to take a 4-2 lead with just under a minute left and the dual was tied at six.
The 157-pound match featured No. 6 ranked
Josiah Rider and Ryan Wheeler. The two teams could not seem to get a big advantage but Rider used riding time to his advantage as he earned a 3-2 win and gave the Grizzlies a 9-3 lead.
165 pounds saw Samuel Loera of Adams State taking on Alexander Holguin of the Mavericks. Loera then took a 9-3 to double the score at 12-6.
Cody Lewis and Seth Latham met in the 174-pound match but Lewis allowed two takedowns en route to his 7-2 win and cut the lead.
Nolan Krone then earned a 18-2 technical fall over Ben Tonnessen at 184 pounds.
Donald Negus of Colorado Mesa earned a 7-2 decision over
Hunter Tobiasson.
Kash Anderson sealed the win for the Mavericks with a fall in 4:45 over
