KEARNEY, Neb. – For the first time, since at least 2010, the No. 8 ranked Adams State University Wrestling Team defeated the No. 3 ranked University of Nebraska-Kearny Lopers at the UNK Midwest Duals, 21-18.
They went 3-0 on the day also defeating Newman 46-3 and Central Missouri, who is receiving votes in the latest poll, 34-10.
The day opened against Central Missouri with the Grizzlies winning seven matches, and four of them coming via the fall.
The second dual saw the Grizzlies win every match against Newman except the 133-poind match. In that dual the Grizzlies had four falls and three technical falls.
In the final dual, the Lopers won the last four matches to almost come back from a 21-0 hole. Kinsella wo, 9-2 t 197 pounds, with Billy Higgins (0:32) and Lee Herrington (2:41) having quick falls at 184 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively.
At 125 pounds, No. 3
Brendon Garcia went 3-0 with a forfeit against Central Missouri, a 59-second fall over Newman's Dylan Sheier and an 11-1 major decision over UNK's Bishop Murray
Isaiah DeLaCerda went 1-3 on the day as he won a 6-1 decision over Drew Arnold in the upset win over the Lopers.
At 141 pounds,
Kieran Thompson went 3-0 as he needed an overtime to defeat Kaden Stanley of Central Missouri, earned a 15-0 technical fall over Newman's Codby Schreiner and 7-3 decision over UNK's Daniel DeRosier.
No. 3 ranked
Josiah Rider went 3-0 on the day as he opened up with a fall over Charlie Getz at 149 pounds in 1:49. He then earned a 16-0 tech fall over Hunter Dietrich of Newman and closed out the day with a narrow 1-0 decision over John Burger of UNK.
No. 1 ranked
Noah Hermosillo, who earned his third RMAC Wrestler of the Week award last week, went 2-0 and stayed undefeated on the season. He opened with a 13-3 decision over JD Culp before earning a forfeit against Newman and closing the day with a 10-0 major decision over UNK's Teontae Wilson.
Aaden Valdez needed 1:46 to earn a fall over UCM's Brayden Talley and a 9-0 major decision over UNK's Briar Reisz.
The Grizzlies, who are 8-0 on the season, return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) dual action on Thursday at No. 12 Colorado Mesa and on Friday at No. 23 ranked Western Colorado. Both duals are set to start at 6:00 p.m.
