WRES | No. 12 Mavericks narrowly down No. 8 Grizzlies

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Wrestling without two ranked wrestlers in the line up on Thursday evening the No. 8 ranked Adams State University Grizzlies saw their perfect 8-0 dual record come to a halt as the No. 12 Colorado Mesa Mavericks escaped Brownson Arena with a 30-20 win.

The first match of the day was at 125 pounds where Maverick redshirt Dawson Collins, this week's RMAC Wrestler of the Week, defeated Adam Concepcion. Concepcion opened the match with a takedown just before two minutes eclipsed in the first period. Collins quickly got an escape before earning a takedown with eight seconds remaining to take a 3-2 lead one where the score stayed that way until the third. Collins earned a reversal in the third and maintained the top position before he earned a fall in 6:34 to take a 6-0 lead over ASU.

No. 9 Colin Metzgar and Isaiah De La Cerda were tied in a battle early. De La Cerda chose the bottom position in the second quarter and unfortunately for De La Cerda, Metzgar earned four near fall points as he stayed on top for the entire period and two near fall points in the final ten seconds made the score 6-0.

After starting in top position, De La Cerda allowed Metzgar to escape to make the score 7-0. With the riding time, Metzgar won the match with a 10-0 major decision to give the Mavericks a 10-0 lead.

The Grizzlies countered with a 10-2 major decision by Kieran Thompson at 141 pounds over Andrew Silva.

Josiah Rider, ranked No. 3 in his weight class, earned the bonus points with a first period fall over Alex Castaneda in 2:53.

Ryan Wheeler needed just 1:15 to win the 157-pound match as No. 1 ranked Noah Hermosillo will not wrestle for the Grizzlies this weekend.

Aaden Valdez took a 4-1 lead in the first period lead 4-1 before extending the lead in the second. The lead stayed the same with Valdez battling for a 16-4 major decision to make the score 16-14.

At 174 pounds, Ryan Rochford took a 2-0 lead before injury struck Alexander Holguin and the Grizzlies earned six points to take a 20-16 lead.

At 184 pounds, Jason Bynarowicz had a huge third period to earn an 12-2 major decision over Hunter Tobiasson to tie the match at 20 with two matches remaining.

At 197 pounds, Kash Anderson earned a 9-1 major decision over Ben Tonnessen.

At heavyweight,  Rueben Samuelson just needed 36 seconds to get a fall over Abraham Garcia.

The Grizzlies will have another tough test on Saturday with the Grizzlies traveling to Gunnison to take on the No. 23 ranked Mountaineers at 6:00 p.m.
