GUNNISON, Colo — The No. 6 ranked Adams State University grapplers had a strong weekend inside the Mountaineer Fieldhouse as they participated in both the Western Colorado Open on Friday and the 32nd Annual Tracy Borah Duals on Saturday.
No team score was calculated in the Open but the Grizzlies did go 3-0 on Saturday. They defeated Findlay, who was receiving votes in the NWCA Week Two Poll, 30-10 before defeating RMAC-affiliate member San Francisco State, 32-12, and downing Simon Fraser (B.C.), 38-15.
On Friday, Elijiah Olguin was the champion at 141 pounds and
Angel Flores was the champion at 149 pounds.
Aaden Valdez dropped his opening match at 157 pounds but rallied back and won five straight matches to take third place.
Saturday's first dual saw the Grizzlies win all but two matches en route to a 30-10 win.
Brendon Garcia earned a 5-4 decision over Nicholas Korhorn at 125 pounds. Dal Van Matre also won a 1-point decision over Gram Shore, 6-5.
Kieran Thompson defeated Cade Cass at 141 pounds via a 5-2 decision while No. 3 ranked
Josiah Rider just needed 1:32 to get a fall over Mason Kleinberg.
Aaden Valdez made easy work of Chase Moore as he scored a 5-0 decision at 157 pounds while Gary Nilson earned a 16-5 major decision over Nico Carrasco at 165 pounds. Samuel Loera earned a 7-4 decision at 174 pounds while
Hunter Tobiasson earned a 2-0 decision over Mark Trifelos at 184 pounds and Ben Tonnessen defeated Jacob Kowalski at 197 pounds. Keigan Yuhas capped off the dual with a 1:01 fall over
Abraham Garcia at 285 pounds.
In the second dual, Adams State won six of the 11 duals. Jack Faczak dropped a 21-5 technical fall at 125 pounds to Marco Ruffinelli while Tony Margiotta spoiled
Isaiah De La Cerda's comeback at 133 pounds with a 9-4 win.
The Grizzlies rallied and won the next four matches with Thompson getting a 4-2 win over Stefano McKinney, Rider defeating Marco Ruffinelli in just a minute before
Aaden Valdez earned a fall.
Carrasco scored a 10-6 win at 165 pounds. Loera dropped his match via a 9-2 decision before Tobiasson earned a fall in 51, Tonnessen earned a 7-0 decision and Callum Bisping earned a 1:40 fall at 285.
De La Cerda rebounded from his season-opening loss with a fall in 1:40 against Simon Fraser. Roder earned a fall in 2:02 and Valdez earned a 6-1 decision .
Cody Lewis earned a 59-second fall at 165 pounds while both Tobiasson and Tonnessen earned big wins on a technical fall and a 45-second fall.
The Grizzlies will now be back in action on Friday when they host for the first time this season. The Grizzlies will take on Chadron State at 6:00 p.m. on Friday before meeting Colorado School of Mines at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both duals will be inside Plachy Hall.
