WBB | Dominguez ties school record, lifts Grizzlies over Seawolves in 1-point affair

ANCHORAGE, Alaska— Every point was needed in a career performance from sophomore Harmanie Dominguez as she helped the Grizzlies secure a thrilling victory with a one-point 83-82 win over the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves inside the Alaska Airlines Center on Friday.

The guard from Las Cruces, N.M., who has played in 37 games as a Grizzly, tied the Adams State school record with 8 three-pointers to help propel her to a career-high 30 points and also a career-high 9 rebounds. Looking at recent record books, it appears that she has now tied Grizzly Hall of Famer Vera Jo Bustos, who had eight in a game. Dominguez was also eyeing the school record for points in a game as Bustos holds that record of 36.

For the Grizzlies, they now improve to 4-3 on the season and a perfect 1-0 in program history as Friday night's contest was the first-ever game between the two.

Adams State delivered an impressive performance in the opening quarter, highlighting their strong defensive skills. The offensive strategies featured skillfully executed layups, such as Kayla Harris' two-pointer assisted by Elaina Watson early in the game. The quarter concluded with Bri Linnear's successful layup, contributing to Adams State's total of 16 points.

In the second quarter of the game, Adams State demonstrated a dynamic performance, showcasing both offensive and defensive prowess. Notably, Kiiyani Anitielu had a strong jumper, once again assisted by Watson, who finished the game with six.

A game-changer occurred with 1:58 remaining in the second quarter when Anchorage native Angelline Nageak nailed a spectacular 3-pointer, she finished the night with 9 points. With just a single second on the clock, the Grizzlies launched a three-pointer attempt, unfortunately missing the mark intensified the atmosphere and set the stage for a high-energy transition into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, RiRi Davis demonstrated precision in free-throw shooting, securing  pivotal points that led to a deadlock at 77-77. In the dwindling moments, Davis secured a crucial layup, contributing 10 points to the Grizzlies' total.

With Nageak delivering her sixth assist of the game, the score was set at 81-77. As the clock ticked down, the scoreboard mirrored a closely contested battle until Anitielu executed a crucial layup, amassing 16 points and benefiting from a vital assist by Nageak, who had a team high seven.

The Grizzlies will be back on the court tomorrow in a second match against the University of Alaska Anchorage with the game scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
