HAYS, Kans. – The Adams State University Grizzlies were paced by the individual crown of Aaden Valdez at 165 pounds at the Bob Smith Open on Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum as five total Grizzlies placed in the top six.
Valdez won the 165-pound title as he earned a 19-5 major decision over Air Force Prep's Ej Beloncik. He made quick work of his five matches as he also had two falls and two decisions.
Nico Carrasco second at 157 pounds after he fell to Ishmael Guerrero, an unattached wrestler in the title match. He reached the title match by winning his two matches with two tech falls and two decisions.
Ben Tonnessen also finished second at 197 pounds after he dropped a 10-6 decision over Ben Gould of CSU Pueblo in the title match. He had two decisions and a fall to reach the title match
Hunter Tobiasson finished in fourth place as he did not compete in the third-place match.
Elijah Olguin sixth place at 141 pounds as he dropped his opening match before wrestling five straight from the consolation side of the bracket with four straight wins, three by decision, before settling for the sixth-place finish.
Since this was an open, no team scored was tallied but other Grizzlies to represent Adams State on Saturday were Joseph Enockson (1-2) at 133 pounds, Jimmizan Redhorse (2-2) at 133 pounds, Cael Figueroa (2-2), including a loss to Olguin, at 141 pounds, Robert Adams (1-2) at 149 pounds, Dylan Pickering (2-2) with two tech fall wins at 149 pounds, Angel Flores (5-1) at 149 pounds, Zack Fish (0-2) at 157 pounds, Hunter Smith (0-2) at 165 pounds, Josh Coon (3-2) at 174 pounds, Sergio Zaragoza (2-2) at 184 pounds, Wil Aucoin (1-2) at 197 pounds and Abraham Garcia (0-2) at 285 pounds.
The Grizzlies will now take a week off before returning to action at the Midwest Classic on Dec. 16.
