CHADRON, NEB. – The No. 8 ranked Adams State University wrestling team proved they are a tournament team on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division II Super 6 Regional. The Grizzlies were able to climb to the top and win the team title with 114 points, four points behind No. 3 ranked University of Nebraska Kearney.
Of those five wrestlers, four of them were regional champions. Qualifying at 125 pounds was No. 3-ranked
Brendon Garcia, qualifying at 149 pounds was No. 3-ranked
Josiah Rider, at 157 pounds and remaining undefeated on the season was No. 1 ranked
Noah Hermosillo, at 165 was
Aaden Valdez and at 184 was
Hunter Tobiasson at third place.
At 125 pounds,
Brendon Garcia, the No. 1 seed and ranked No. 3 at the weight in the latest polls, won his quarterfinal match with a 12-2 major decision over University of Nebraska Kearney's Bishop Murray. He won his semifinal match 5-3 over Chadron State's Quade Smith. He capped of the night with a 3-1 decision in the title bout over Western Colorado's Patrick Allis.
At 133 pounds, Dale Van Matre dropped his first match to Weston Diblasi of Colorado School of Mines via a fall in 1:46.he was then eliminate after winning one consolation match, 3-2.
At 141 pounds,
Kieran Thompson opened the day with a 5-1 decision over New Mexico Highlands' Joseph Misitano. He dropped his next match to Michael Atencio of CSU Pueblo. He was then eliminated.
At 149 pounds, No. 3 ranked
Josiah Rider made quick work of his opponents. He pulled out a 4:40 fall over Simon Fraser's Samuel Patton. He then earned a quarterfinal 16-0 technical fall over New Mexico Highlands' Deklyn Miller in 5:00. Rider than won in a tiebreaker over Josh FUentez Norikyo of San Francisco State. He then defeated Jason Hanenberg of Western Colorado 4-0.
No. 1 and undefeated
Noah Hermosillo kept his undefeated streak alive at 157 pounds as he earned two major decision to battle his way into the quarterfinals. He earned a 13-3 major decision over Fort Hays State's Cody Hicks and a 15-5 win over Simon Frasier's Magnus McCrackin. He then earned a 4:37 fall over Cater Noehre of Colorado School of Mines. He than won the title with a 11-5 decision.
At 165 pounds,
Aaden Valdez won his first match over Boltyn Taam of San Francisco State with a 55-second fall. He then earned a 7-0 decision in the semifinals before winning the title with a 4:28 fall over Augustus Dalton.
Ryan Rochford finished fourth at 174 as he advanced at 174 pounds as he earned a narrow 3-0 decision over CSU Pueblo's Cameron Nesbitt. He than dropped the semifinal match before winning the consolation semifinal and dropping the third place match,
Hunter Tobiasson battled all the way back after he dropped his first match at 184 pounds via a 6-4 decision to Chadron State's Keegan Gehlhausen. He won the next four matches, three of them, including the title match, by falls to earn the berth to nationals.
Ben Tonnessen dropped an 11-8 decision to Bryan Zutavern of Chadron State. Before winning three straight to make it to the third place match where he was defeated 8-5.
Adam Alvarenga was pinned by Chadron State's Mason Watt in 1:08 at 285 pounds. He was pinned in the consolation semifinal in 2:09.
The Grizzlies will look to finish just as high as last year's finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships, where they emerged with three national champions and a sixth place finish, when they travel to Cedar Rapid, Iowa in two weeks.
