LOS LUNAS, N.M. – Following an exciting marathon on Friday afternoon, the Adams State University softball team dropped two games on Saturday before splitting Sunday's games to finish the 2023 South Central Region Crossover this past weekend.
The Grizzlies dropped a 10-9 eighth-inning affair to Simon Fraser. In the game, Adams State saw
Mariah Madrid and
Breck Smith hit bombs. After scoreless first and second innings, both team scored one run in the third inning before both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Red Leafs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth but the Grizzlies countered with another Madrid home run before Smith hit her three-run shot to tie the game at five.
The Grizzlies scored four runs in the top of the eighth, unfortunately, the Red Leafs countered and scored five runs including a walkoff single to get the win.
Saturday's second game saw a 13-4 seven-inning affair with the West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs started the season with a bang, exploding for four runs in the top of the first inning The Grizzlies scratched across a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the WT lead down to five, but the run was all Adams State could muster.
Following a second-inning solo shot by WTAMU, both teams went scoreless until the sixth inning.
In the home half of the sixth, Adams State took advantage of a fielder's choice and a wild pitch to score two runs. Going into the final inning, the Lady Buffs found the offense once more to close out the game with a big win.
The Grizzlies opened Sunday with an 8-7 win over WNMU. After trailing 5-0 entering the fourth inning, the Grizzlies chipped into the lead scoring a single run, a sac fly, in the fourth before pushing four runs across in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The Mustangs had a two-run home run in the seventh but senior pitcher
Jade Garbiso was able to slam the door for her first win of the campaign.
The Grizzlies were only able to get two runs across in the bottom of the fourth as
Jade Garbiso hit a two run shot. Texas Permian Basin scored 11 runs in sixth innings to get the win.
The Grizzlies will return to action this weekend when they travel to Lubbock Texas to take part in the Lubbock Sports College Invitational. They will take on Texas Permian Basin and Lubbock Christian on Friday.
