CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling championships continued on Friday evening at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The No. 5-ranked Adams State Grizzlies, who went 4-1 in the opening session with the four NCAA Division II Super Regional VI champions advancing to the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes. After Friday night's action, two wrestlers remain in the hunt for national gold while one is still alive on the consolation side.
Saturday morning's semifinal session is set to start at 10:00 a.m. Central (9:00 a.m. Mountain).
No. 2 seeded
Brendon Garcia earned an 8-2 decision over Western Colorado's Patrick Allis to advance to the semifinals.
At 149 pounds, No. 2 seeded
Josiah Rider earned an 8-3 decision over Northern State's Wyatt Turnquist.
No. 1 seeded and ranked
Noah Hermosillo suffered his first loss of the season as Gannon's Dominic Means escaped Friday's quarterfinal matches with a 7-6 victory. He is still alive in the tournament as he rebounded with a 7-5 decision in the consolations.
At 165 pounds,
Aaden Valdez also dropped his semifinal match to Upper Iowa's Chase Luensman via a 10-5 decision before he was eliminated from the tournament by St. Cloud's Anthony Herrera via a 9-4 decision.
At 184 pounds,
Hunter Tobiasson dropped his first match of the night to be eliminated.
