QUINCY, Mo. – Tyler Hubbard netted a game-high six goals including two in the final period in which Adams State scored five, but it wasn't enough as Benedictine College (KS) held off the fast-charging Grizzlies en route to an 11-10 win this afternoon.
With the loss in its final non-conference game of the year, ASU falls to 1-2 on the young season.
ASU's
Dawson Balabanoff got the scoring started with a goal at the 13:29 mark, before BC answered with two goals in a span of less than a minute.
After Hubbard knotted the contest at 3:50, Benedictine's Jordan Rodriguez broke the tie with less than a minute left to give BC the lead for good.
Benedictine outscored the Grizzlies 4-2 in the second period, with Hubbard netting two more scores, before using a 4-1 edge in the third period to take a commanding 11-5 lead entering the fourth.
In that frame,
Travis Brave Heart, Hubbard and
Daniell Joy brought ASU to within 11-10 with 3:26 left in regulation, but BC's defense thwarted any hopes of a comeback by shutting down ASU over the final 3:26.
Goalie
Jamison Blackwell made four saves while
Ryan Berger was credited with seven, but Berger was saddled with the loss after allowing five scores.
In the game, Benedictine won 22 of 25 face-offs while converting 2-of-6 extra-man opportunities compared to 0-for-1 for the Grizzlies.
ASU begins RMAC action on Saturday, April 1, hosting Colorado State University Pueblo for a 2 pm start.
