PUEBLO, Colo. -- The softball teams from Adams State University and Colorado State University-Pueblo split an April 1 doubleheader on the Thunderwolves' field.
CSU-Pueblo won the opener 5-2, and the Grizzlies took the nightcap 9-3. The split leaves ASU with a record of 9-26 overall, 6-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSU-Pueblo sports a record of 12-23 overall and 7-19 in conference play.
Adams State had eight hits in the opener but left nine runners on base. The Thunderwolves scored three runs in the first two innings. The Grizzlies rallied with their two runs in the fifth inning. Riley Marshall hit a lead-off home run to account for one run. Breck Smith got credit for the other RBI. She reached on an infield error and drove home Kaia Bradford.
Bradford finished with three hits. Angeline Mitchell added a pair. Starting pitcher Tayler Duncan allowed five runs and eight hits in four innings.
CSU-Pueblo's Madelyn Huerta had two hits. Caitlyn Cole had two hits, including a home run, and drove in a pair. Starting pitcher Marissa Robertson struck out tw and walked two in her four innings of work.
In the second game, the Grizzlies erupted for five runs in the third inning. Belinda Vargas had the big hit, a two-run double down the left-field line. Bradford, Mariah Madrid and Smith also added RBIs to the cause.
Angeline Mitchell added an RBI single in the fourth inning. Vargas added an RBI double in the seventh inning, and Marshall reached safely on an error to drive in a run.
Vargas finished with four hits (two doubles were part of her effort) in as many trips to the plate, good for three RBIs. Winning pitcher Jade Garbiso, who struck out four and didn't allow a base on balls, helped her cause at the plate with a pair of base hits.
For the Thunderwolves, Cole, Huerta, Darleen Falcon and Tori Cordova had the base hits. Raelynn Rogers and Delaney Barela got credit for the RBIs.
ASU returns to work Thursday, April 6, at Chadron (Neb.) State College in the opener of a four-game series. First pitch is at noon.
