SB | Grizzlies drop doubleheader, series to CSM

ALAMOSA, Colo. – the Colorado School of Mines softball team was able to pick up their second series sweep of the season with a doubleheader sweep by scores of 8-4 and 8-2 over the Adams State Grizzlies here at the ASU Softball Field on Sunday.

For the Orediggers (22-21, 21-13), big innings were the order of the day as four of the five scoring innings Sunday afternoons resulted in at least three runs as the offense pounded out 26 hits over the course of 14 innings while the Grizzlies (9-34, 6-26), despite leading early in the finale, found themselves unable to match Mines' offensive output as they succumbed to the sweep.

GAME 1: Colo. Sch. of Mines 8, Adams State 4
After both teams left a runner on in the first inning, Mines got on the board first with four runs in the top of the second. ASU did get a run back in the home half of the inning, as a leadoff solo home run from Belinda Vargas to left field cut the lead to 4-1.

Following a third inning that saw each side go down in order, the fourth inning saw Mines hang another crooked number on the scoreboard with three runs to make it a 7-1 game.

The second run of the game for Adams State came in the bottom of the fourth, as Vargas went deep for the second time in the game, this time to centerfield as lead was trimmed back to five at 7-2.

Mines answered back with an RBI single back up the middle to score Renata Boyd and make it 8-2 in the fifth inning before Vargas hit an RBI triple and scored to close out the scoring.

Game 2: Colo. Sch. of Mines 8, Adams State 2
The series finale started out scoreless through an inning and a half until Adams State got on the board with some creative baserunning, as a delayed steal of third following a one-out double resulted in an errant throw that allowed pitcher Jade Garbiso to score and help her own cause.

Mines had a chance to answer in the top of the third but ASU escaped the inning with a flyout to left field.

The Grizzlies maintained their 1-0 lead until Mines finally broke through in the fifth inning here they scored three to make it a two-run game at 3-1.

ASU was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, getting the first two runners on before a sacrifice bunt advanced both 60 feet. An RBI groundout to shortstop made it 3-2, but Allison Westbrook (5-1) was able to get a popup to first base to strand the tying run on base and end the inning.

The Orediggers answered right back in the top of the sixth with five runs to close out the scoring.

LOOKING AHEAD
Adams State will be playing their final road games of the season next weekend as they'll head to Durango, Colo. to play Fort Lewis Collehe in a four-game series.
