ALAMOSA, Colo. – Winning seven of Friday night's ten matches of Adams State's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)-opening dual proved to be just what the Grizzlies needed to snap a four-dual losing streak with a final score of 23-15.
The last win for the Grizzlies came on Jan. 31, 2019 when the Grizzlies escaped Grand Junction with a 21-19 win.
The loss snapped a 17-match Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual winning streak for the Mavericks which dated to January 23, 2021, when they fell 24-18 to No. 18 Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
The Grizzlies came out ready on Friday as they won the first six matches of the dual and led 20-0 as the
Isaiah Gamez (14-9), Dale Van Matre (6-2),
Angel Flores (6-0) and
Elijah Olguin (2-0) secured the first four matches by decision. They then won the 157- and 165-pound matches with major decisions as Nico Carrasco won 11-2 and
Aaden Valdez won 10-1.
The Grizzlies dropped the 174-pound match (10-3 decision), the 184-pound match (fall) and the 285-pound match (fall) to wrap up the win.
The Grizzlies, now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC, will hit the road next week and head to British Columbia, Canada to take on Simon Fraser and San Franciso State in RMAC duals on Friday, Jan. 20 and Sat. Jan. 21.
