WBB | Grizzlies drop third straight

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Adams State women's basketball team showcased a strong defense but faltered in seizing late offensive opportunities during Saturday night's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) game, resulting in a 68-65 loss to the UCCS Mountain Lions.

Adams State's overall record for the season now stands at 11-6, with a 6-3 record in the RMAC. Meanwhile, UCCS has surged half a game ahead of the Grizzlies in the RMAC standings, boasting a 10-6 overall record and a 7-3 conference record.

Angelline Nageak played a pivotal defensive role for the Grizzlies, contributing seven steals, just one shy of her career-high of eight. Harmanie Dominguez led the Grizzlies with 19 points, including four three-pointers.

With the score at 65-63 and less than a minute on the clock, Dominguez blocked a crucial shot that Nageak rebounded, ultimately tying the game at 65 with 31.4 seconds remaining. However, the Mountain Lions regained the lead with 11 seconds left, with Amyah Moore Allen setting a new career-high of 25 points in the game.

A turnover turnover sealed the victory for UCCS.

Adams State faced their largest deficit in the first quarter, trailing 22-12 with 30 seconds left. The Grizzlies struggled with a 36.4 percent field goal percentage but capitalized on free throw opportunities, converting 5-of-8.

In the second quarter, Adams State staged a comeback with a 9-0 run in the first three minutes, briefly taking a 23-22 lead. Although the Mountain Lions responded with a 5-1 run, Adams State narrowed the gap to 34-32 at the halftime break.

The third quarter witnessed a defensive battle, with the Grizzlies eventually taking a 40-38 lead with 3:52 left. However, UCCS reclaimed the lead, entering the fourth quarter with a 47-46 advantage.

Adams State fought back with six consecutive free throws, regaining a 53-51 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.

Adams State aims to break their three-game losing streak on Friday as they return to Plachy Hall to face Colorado Christian at 5:30 p.m.
