BURNABY, B.C. — The Adams State University wrestling team traveled across boarders to Canada on Saturday for two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals. The Grizzlies showed up big, and after narrowly dropping the first dual, 24-23, after the second tie breaker, they dominated the host Red Leafs, 26-12.
San Francisco State 24, Adams State 23 (SF wins via criteria)
The first dual of the day saw the Grizzlies drop a match due to criteria as after all the matches were completed the score was tied at 23. Following tiebreaker procedures, after each team won five matches, the team victory was awarded to the Gators as they earned a fall at heavyweight.
A technical fall by
Isaiah Gamez and a narrow loss by Dale Van Matre saw the dual was going to be a back and forth affair.
Angel Flores jumped out to a 3-1 lead at pounds after one period before extending the lead to 7-1 after two. He and his adversary traded takedowns with Flores ultimately getting the 14-5 major decision.
The 149-pound match saw
Travis Vialpando on the bottom end of a 19-3 technical fall.
Aaden Valdez jumped out to a quick lead and his dissection in mat work proved decisive as he eventually got enough for a major decision at 11-0 with ridding time.
At 174 pounds Samuel Loera jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period, however, starting In the bottom position, he was unable to escape and was tilted for four near fall points to trail 5-3. Getting the decision to start the third, he chose the bottom. It was a gamble that did not payoff as four near fall points were awarded to make the score 9-3. Loera did hold on as to not give up the extra team point as the final score was 10-3 after riding time was appointed.
At 184 pounds,
Hunter Tobiasson wasted little time taking a 3-0 lead before controlling the pace and pulling out an 11-3 major decision.
Adams State earned six points as Ben Tonnessen earned a forfeit at 197 pounds.
Abraham Garcia represented the Grizzlies at heavyweight and was flipped for a fall with four seconds remaining the first frame.
As the lineup flipped over,
Adam Concepcion earned another early takedown for the Grizzlies and used the majority of the first to wear down his opponent for the win.
