SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Adams State University Grizzlies put up enough in the first half to outlast the a furious comeback attempt by the Westminster Griffins on Friday night. The Grizzlies won the contest, their second straight, 92-81.
Adams State jumped out to a 53-31 halftime lead thanks to a 61.3 (19-of-31) showing from the field, even more impressive was the 20 3-poiint shots they took in the first half. They converted on ten of them.
The second half saw the Grizzlies get their biggest lead of 24 points, 63-39, but a scoring drought of 4:33 hurt the Grizzlies as the Griffins went on a 15-0 run to cut the lead down to nine with 11:37 left in the second stanza.
After breaking the drought, the Griffins continued to cut the lead and pulled within seven, 67-60, halfway through. The lead cut down just five points, but the Grizzlies earned some momentum and made the score 76-64.
Again the Griffins soared back but a missed dunk by the Griffins led to a deep trey by
Jude Tapia to make the score 79-71 after the final media timeout.
Adams State closed out the game with the win as
Isaiah Sampson was the leading scorer with 22 points as he was 9-of-12 from the field.
As a team the Grizzlies were 61.1 percent from the field and hit 14-of-28 from beyond the arch.
The Grizzlies now 6-12 overall and 4-8 in the RMAC return home next week when they host MSU Denver and Colorado School of Mines in pivotal games. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. both days.
