ALAMOSA, Colo. – In a hard-fought match, the top-ranked University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos managed to secure a 28-12 victory over the Adams State Grizzlies at Plachy Hall on Friday night.
UCO, boasting 42 wins in their last 43 duals, continued their dominance with a 17th consecutive victory, improving to a perfect 10-0 for the season. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies' overall record now stands at 4-2.
Adams State seized an early advantage when Isaiah Gamez executed a pivotal move against Garret Steidley, securing a first-period fall with just a second to spare as the referee's hand hit the mat at the 2:59 mark.
UCO's Peter Rolle contributed to the scoreboard at 133 pounds with a commanding 6-0 shutout, fueled by a pair of well-executed takedowns.
The packed gymnasium erupted with excitement during the 141-pound match as Angel Flores delivered a stunning upset, defeating the fourth-ranked Dylan Lucas with a convincing 7-0 decision, propelling Adams State to a 9-3 lead.
However, the Bronchos mounted a comeback with three consecutive victories: a 19-9 major decision, a dominant 16-1 tech fall, and a well-fought 6-2 decision, swinging the momentum in their favor to take a 15-9 lead.
Another upset for the Grizzlies occurred at 174 pounds, where Samuel Loera used his skill for a 9-3 decision over seventh-ranked Anthony DesVigne.
Unfortunately, Adams State couldn't maintain the momentum, dropping the final three matches – two by major decision and the last by a technical fall – concluding the dual in favor of the Bronchos.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies will return to action on Friday, Feb 2, facing Chadron State College, followed by a matchup against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1:00 p.m.
