Pueblo, Colo. — The Adams State University Grizzlies (2-6-2, 0-3-1) were unable to keep up with the offense of Colorado State University Pueblo (9-2-1, 4-0-0), losing 5-1 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup on Thursday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
CSU Pueblo's Tobi Osifodunrin set the tone early, scoring the first of his two goals just 11 minutes into the match off assists from Caio Oliveira and Shjon Andrews. Giancarlo Pretto followed up with a second goal for the ThunderWolves in the 26th minute, also assisted by Oliveira, giving CSU Pueblo a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Thunderwolves continued their dominance in the second half, with Osifodunrin netting his second goal in the 48th minute. Jose Bustamante added another goal in the 66th minute, assisted by Osifodunrin, extending CSU Pueblo's lead to 4-0.
Adams State found a brief glimmer of hope in the 68th minute when Ranulfo Lopez scored off a well-placed shot, bringing the score to 4-1. However, CSU Pueblo quickly answered with a final goal from Logan Cozier in the 87th minute, sealing the Grizzlies' fate.
Adams State struggled to generate offense, managing only six shots, three of which were on target. Lopez was the lone scorer for the Grizzlies, while goalkeeper JP Fernandez made seven saves despite allowing five goals.
"Obviously not the result we were looking for and we were able to take one of the best teams in the country out of their game for a good period of time in the second half. They're a ranked team for a reason, they play their game very well and we just had the unfortunate situation of conceding some sloppy goals. You take 3 of those goals away and it's a lot closer game at the end. We'll get back to work Friday and Saturday and be ready to take on #4 ranked UCCS Sunday," said Head Coach Justin Gilfert.
With the loss, Adams State remains winless in conference play, while CSU Pueblo stays atop the RMAC standings in second with a perfect 4-0-0 record.
The Grizzlies will face off with UCCS on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. as they look to secure their first RMAC win.
