Alamosa, Colo. — The Adams State women's soccer team faced a formidable, No. 1-ranked Colorado School of Mines squad Sunday afternoon at ASU Soccer & Lacrosse Field, ultimately falling 3-1. Despite a tenacious defensive showing, the Grizzlies could not contain a powerful Mines offense led by forward Bella Campos.
The first half was a defensive battle, with Adams State's goalkeeper Ashlyn Bartley making crucial saves to keep the game scoreless. Bartley would go on to register an impressive nine saves in the match, showcasing her resilience under a relentless Mines attack.
The breakthrough came shortly after halftime. In the 47th minute, Mines' Campos found the back of the net off an assist from teammate Reese McDermott, putting the Orediggers up 1-0. Campos continued her offensive dominance, scoring again in the 73rd and 75th minutes to complete her hat trick, giving Mines a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Grizzlies fought back, and in the 83rd minute, forward Grace Abbott scored for Adams State with assists from Emily Ibsen and Colette Tena. Abbott's goal energized the home crowd, but the late push was not enough to overcome the deficit.
The game saw a total of 20 shots by Mines compared to Adams State's two, highlighting the challenge faced by the Grizzlies' defense. Mines also led in corner kicks, with seven to Adams State's one.
"Even though we didn't get a result today. There are a ton of positives we can take away from today. Everyone played a huge role in the game. Grace scored a great goal. Which is also our first goal at Mines since 2011. We never gave up and we played hard for 90 minutes. That is all us as coaches care about," said Head Coach Alex Greco.
The Grizzlies, now 2-11-1 for the season, will look to regroup and take positives from this performance as they prepare for their next match when they head to CSU Pueblo to face off with the Thunderwolves on Halloween.
