Adams State Falls to Fort Lewis Despite Strong Offensive Effort

Alamosa, Colo. --  Adams State (2-6-1, 0-4-0) fell 3-0 to Fort Lewis (6-1-1, 3-0-0) on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at ASU Soccer & Lacrosse Field.

Fort Lewis took control early, with Rachel Peebles scoring the opening goal in the 20th minute off an assist from Josie Coulter. Coulter added two more goals for the Skyhawks, finding the back of the net in the 47th and 60th minutes to secure her brace.

The Grizzlies' offensive efforts were highlighted by a total of 13 shots, six of which were on target. Forward Emily Ibsen was a standout, registering one of Adams State's closest chances, forcing a save from Fort Lewis goalkeeper Katlyn Rosenbaum in the first half. Forward Erica McDermott also played a key role in Adams State's attack, taking multiple shots on goal and pushing Fort Lewis' defense throughout the match.

"We've got what it takes to succeed, but our own actions have held us back. It'sup to us to change this, and together, we can turn these setbacks into our greatest strength," said Head Coach Alex Greco.

Grace Abbott and Molly Lancaster added to the Grizzlies' offensive pressure, each recording a shot on goal. However, despite increased aggression in the second half and a higher shot count than Fort Lewis during that period, Adams State was unable to convert opportunities into goals.

Defensively, goalkeeper Ashlyn Bartley put in a valiant effort with two critical saves, keeping Adams State within striking distance. However, Bartley faced a strong Fort Lewis offense led by Josie Coulter, who scored twice. Bartley received a yellow card late in the game at the 85th minute and backup goalkeeper Lianna Albert replaced Bartley in the closing minutes of the game but did not face any shots.

Fort Lewis outshot Adams State 16-13 and added pressure with four corner kicks, compared to the Grizzlies' three. Despite an improved second half, Adams State was unable to find the net.

The Grizzlies will look to bounce back as they continue conference play next week as they face Regis University on the road Friday.
