Late Surge Lifts Adams State Past Kutztown in Season Opener

Canyon, Texas – Adams State Women's Basketball opened the 2024-25 season with a 69-56 win over Kutztown at the D2CCA Tipoff Classic. 28 points in the fourth quarter from the Grizzlies was the final push needed to overcome the Golden Bears.

The game began with Kutztown setting the pace, leading 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. Adams State responded with consistency in the second quarter, managing to keep the score tight despite Kutztown's lead and relentless defense. By halftime, Kutztown held onto a slim advantage at 30-23.

Adams State found its rhythm in the second half, led by forward Taejhuan Hill, who delivered a dominant double-double performance with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Hill's efforts on both ends of the court played a key role, as she showcased her versatility with scoring in the paint, tenacious rebounding, and strong defensive stops. Guard Angelline Nageak bolstered Adams State's offense, adding 16 points, including 4 three-pointers, while guard Kiiyani Anitielu provided 15 points, 4 steals, and multiple assists that kept Adams State's momentum going.

In the third quarter, Adams State narrowed the gap, outscoring Kutztown 18-15. The team's increased defensive intensity forced Kutztown into numerous turnovers, creating fast-break opportunities that allowed Adams State to chip away at the lead. By the time the fourth quarter began, the game was within reach, and Adams State took full advantage. Despite a slow start and trailing 45-41 going into the fourth quarter, Kutztown struggled offensively in the fourth quarter, allowing Adams State to take control of the game with a late surge.

Adams State's defensive play was a highlight, forcing 16 turnovers and capitalizing on fast breaks, particularly in the second half.

This opening win places Adams State at 1-0 as they set their sights on a strong season within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Grizzlies will be back in action tomorrow facing off against Harding at 3 p.m. MT.
