Grizzlies Power Past Northern New Mexico in High-Scoring Showdown

Alamosa, Colo. — Adams State University put together a solid all-around performance to secure a 97-88 win over Northern New Mexico in a non-conference battle Wednesday night at Plachy Hall.

The Grizzlies (4-3) had contributions from all over the roster. John Harge led the charge with 18 points on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting while grabbing five boards. Luke Williams added 16 points, including a clutch three-pointer in the second half. Wyatt Helming chipped in 13 points and three rebounds, and Jaylen Alexander made his presence felt with 12 points and two blocks. Jude Tapia was everywhere, finishing with 11 points and five assists to go with his hustle on both ends of the court.

Adams State started hot, attacking the paint and running the floor to take control early. They racked up 14 fast-break points in the first half, helping them take a 46-42 lead into the break. Their defense was key, forcing turnovers and turning them into easy buckets.

Northern New Mexico (0-6) didn't make it easy, though. Gabriel Gutierrez led the Eagles with 16 points, and Joziah Ramos added 15, knocking down three triples. Jesus Mendoza came off the bench firing, scoring 13 points with three three-pointers of his own. Despite their fight, the Eagles couldn't overcome 24 turnovers, which Adams State turned into 24 points.

The second half saw both teams trading blows, but Adams State stayed composed. Key plays from Williams and Tapia down the stretch helped the Grizzlies keep the Eagles at arm's length. The Grizzlies also showed their depth, with 42 points coming off the bench, and owned the paint with 46 points inside.

Adams State's defense made its mark with 13 steals, keeping Northern New Mexico out of rhythm when it mattered most.

With their fourth win of the season, the Grizzlies have some momentum heading into RMAC play. They'll take on Colorado School of Mines on Dec. 5, looking to keep things rolling as conference play gets underway.
