Grizzlies fall to Westminster 2-1 on Senior Day

Alamosa, Colo. –– In a hard-fought physical match Adams State Grizzlies fell to Westminster (UT) by a final score of 2-1 on Senior Day. Despite a strong showing, Adams State couldn't find an equalizer in the second half after Westminster's Deontae Ben scored the game-winner in the 50th minute.

Westminster struck early, with Jack Cardwell scoring just two minutes into the game, assisted by Cuauhtemoc Borjon. Adams State responded quickly, as Avery Richards found the back of the net in the 27th minute, leveling the score with help from Berend Heijmans.

Adams State had 21 shots compared to Westminster's 17, but the efforts weren't enough to overcome the defense and goalkeeping of Westminster's Tommy Manwaring, who made 11 saves. On the Grizzlies' side, goalkeeper JP Fernandez was equally active, stopping 11 shots as well.

"Tough game to swallow with how well we played in certain areas of the field but yet again individual mistakes is the reason why the scoreboard says differently. Fabian and Fufo have been outstanding all season and year so a big shoutout to them for their commitment to this program," said Head Coach Justin Gilfert.

The Grizzlies showed grit throughout the match but were unable to capitalize on several close opportunities. The loss leaves Adams State still searching for their first conference win, with a record of 2-11-2 overall and 0-8-1 in the league.

This was Adams State's final home game of the season, they will play their final match on the road Wednesday when they travel to Fort Lewis College for a 6:00 p.m. game.
