Alamosa, Colorado — In the Grizzlies Conference home opener, Adams State took the win 75-63 over Colorado School of Mines on Thursday afternoon. The win improved the Grizzlies' record to 6-4 overall, and 1-0 in Conference.
Adams State leaned on strong performances, by Kiiyani Anitielu and Ri'Ahana Davis who combined for 35 of the Grizzlies' 75 points. Anitielu finished with 21 points on outstanding shooting, going 8-13 from the floor, including 2-6 from behind the arc, along with knocking down all three of her free throw attempts. Davis finished with 14 points, also having an outstanding shooting performance going 6-10 from the floor, including 2-4 from behind the arc. Davis also led the team in rebounds and steals collecting six boards and four steals showing her ability to have a great impact, both on the offensive and defensive sides of the game.
The Grizzlies' strong second quarter set the tone for the rest of the game, as they outscored Colorado School of Mines 25-11 taking a 17-point lead into halftime. Both the Grizzlies' offense and defense shined in the second quarter, as they held the Orediggers to 4-12 from the floor, and 1-4 from behind the arc, while shooting 11-17 from the floor and 3-5 from behind the arc themselves.
The Orediggers showed fight in the second half outscoring the Grizzlies by five points, but it was not enough after the Grizzlies dominated the first half.
The Adams State defense set the tone for the game, holding the Orediggers to 46% from the floor, and only 33% from behind the arc. The Grizzlies also collected 17 steals and forced 27 turnovers by Colorado School of Mines. Ri'Ahana Davis led the way with four steals, with Kiiyani Anitielu, Angelline Nageak, and Brooke Rodgers following suit with three steals each.
The Grizzlies will look to continue their strong start to conference play, as they play their next game at home, against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Saturday, December 7th, at 1 p.m.
