ALAMOSA, Colo. – Even though there were just two matches left with a tie score, the Adams State University Grizzlies were able to make some stunning wins to claim a 23-16 win over the No. 25 ranked Western Colorado Mountaineers here inside Plachy Hall on Thursday night.
With the win the Grizzlies improved to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC, meanwhile the Mountaineers fall to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Adams State earned six points at 133 pounds as
DJ Van Matre secured a forfeit to put Adams State up 9-0 after
Isaiah Gamez pulled out 4-3 decision with a late third period takedown in his win.
Adams State then saw
Angel Flores pick up a 21-7 major decision over Zack Flowers to make the score 13-0.
Dean Noble needed just 41 seconds to pull off a fall over
Travis Vialpando at 149 pounds to make the score 13-6. Ryan Wilson then earned a 7-0 shutout at 157 pounds over Nico Carassco before Adams State earned a 9-6 win at 165 pounds as
Aaden Valdez downed Walker Heckendorf.
Cole Hernandez defeated Samiuel Loera at 174 pounds before Cole Gray tied the dual with a win over
Sergio Zaragoza at 184 pounds.
Ben Tonnessen gave the Grizzlies a huge win 14-0 to count as the game winning match.
The eruption point of the night came at the 285-pound match as Will Aucoin, weighing a significant amount less than his opponent, get a first period takedown before surviving the final two periods over Zach Schraeder to get a 4-1 win and secure the win.
The Grizzlies will close out the regular season next week when they travel to Pueblo on Valentine's Day for the final regular season dual with the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves. The first match is set for 6:00 p.m.
Adams State will then be at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open in Golden, Colo. on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 10:00 a.m.
