ALAMOSA, Colo.—Entering the weekend with identical records, the Adams State University and Fort Lewis College softball teams pulled out a split in Friday afternoon's doubleheader.
Game 1: FLC 6, ASU 2
Despite five defensive errors in the first two innings, the game remained relatively low-scoring as both defenses tightened up. However, momentum shifted in the top of the third inning when a two-out error allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate for Fort Lewis.
The Skyhawks gradually extended the gap, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, also with two outs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Adams State finally found success at the plate.
Belinda Vargas came through in the clutch with a two-out single that drove in two runs, breaking their hitless streak.
GAME 2: ASU 10, FLC 6
After surrendering two runs in the top of the third inning
Belinda Vargas once again got the party started as she hit a three-run home run in a six run fourth inning to give the Grizzlies a 6-2 lead. After surrendering another lead the Grizzlies scored four in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. The Skyhawks prevented a run-rule win by scoring three before the game was closed out.
