ALAMOSA, Colo. – Despite strong offensive performances, the Adams State defense struggled, leading to two run-rule losses against the visiting Fort Lewis College Skyhawks in a doubleheader, both games ending in six innings.
Fort Lewis improves to 5-16 overall and 3-9 in conference play, while Adams State falls to 3-19 overall and 1-11 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) matchups.
Game 1: FLC 9, ASU 1 (6 inn.)
Fort Lewis tallied nine runs on nine hits, while Adams State managed only one run, coming in the bottom of the second inning with Mariah Madrid's triple to right-center field.
Amiee Shanks (4-7) started the game for Fort Lewis, pitching all six innings and allowing four hits and a single earned run. Shanks also recorded three strikeouts without issuing any walks. Adams State's Danielle Hood (1-9) suffered the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and conceding nine runs, five of which were earned. Hood also walked three batters and hit four.
Game 2: FLC 18, ASU 10 (6 inn.)
The second game witnessed a total of 28 runs on 30 combined hits, with both teams scoring three runs in the first inning. Adams State's runs came from a Makayla Veglia single. Fort Lewis surged with seven runs in the second inning, but the Grizzlies mounted a comeback, sparked by Madrid's bases-loaded triple, leading to a four-run rally.
After an unearned run in the top of the third, Adams State saw Belinda Vargas hit a solo home run down the left-field line.
Hailie Mann (1-9) secured her first win of the season for Fort Lewis, pitching 5.1 innings and striking out five batters with one walk and one hit batter. Ellie Heiser (0-3) took the loss for Adams State, giving up 10 earned runs on 13 hits in just 1.1 innings of work.
