GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In a pair of challenging innings, the Adams State University Grizzlies were defeated in both games of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) twin bill on Saturday.
The Mavericks (17-7, 15-3 RMAC) extended their winning streak to seven games this season and 28 consecutive victories over the Grizzlies since 2015, with their first game marking their 1,000th in the Division II Era.
With a RMAC record of 1-17 and an overall season record of 3-24, the Grizzlies have now suffered eight consecutive losses, remaining winless in ten road games.
GAME 1: CMU 8, ASU 2
The Mavericks capitalized on four Grizzly errors, scoring seven unearned runs in the fifth inning. Although the game appeared close with Adams State holding a 2-1 lead going into the half inning, courtesy of solo home runs by
Grace Hendrickson and
Belinda Vargas, the tide turned swiftly.
Pitcher
Aubree Davis, despite conceding only one earned run, fell to a 2-10 record for the season, allowing eight runs on eight hits, along with four walks and five strikeouts.
Preslee Christensen matched a career-high with nine strikeouts in a complete game victory, bringing her season record to 5-3.
Adams State managed to score two runs on five hits and one walk.
GAME 2: CMU 9, ASU 3
ASU catcher
Caylie Eiguren ignited hope with a 3-run homer in the second inning, putting ASU ahead 3-1. However, the Mavericks mounted a comeback, scoring the final eight runs of the game, including a 5-run bottom of the fourth inning to break a 3-3 tie.
Myah Arrieta went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, including Colorado Mesa's sole home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory.
Hannah Sattler (3-2) clinched the win in relief, pitching four innings and allowing just two infield singles to the Grizzlies in the seventh.
Danielle Hood (1-11) suffered the loss, conceding eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits and three walks, while securing three strikeouts.
