BASE | Grizzlies sweep CCU for first time in a decade

PUEBLO – A rare Monday doubleheader didn't seem to bother the Adams State baseball team March 18.

Something clocked and locked for the Grizzlies swept the twin bill from Colorado Christian University scores of 25-7 and 13-10 at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

ASU, which has won four games in a row, improved to 10-16 overall, 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions fell to 2-23 overall and 0-8 within the RMAC. A late-week snowstorm in the Denver area prompted the Monday double dip and the change in location.

ASU has its second-longest winning streak since becoming a member of NCAA Division II. The longest streak was from 2013-2014 when the Grizzlies won five in a row. ASU leads the lifetime series against the Mountain Lions 23-21.

Adams State kept the momentum from Sunday night's win and scored at least one run in each inning of the opener. That included a seven-spot in the second inning and a six-run rally in the sixth inning. The Grizzlies had 21 base hits and took advantage of six CCU errors.

Phil Carter was the winning pitcher. It was his first victory of the season. He pitched five innings and struck out five. Connor Murray finished up and allowed one hit and struck out one.

He had help from several sources. Jack Dere had four hits and as many RBIs. Mike Bathauer finished with two hits, including a double, and four runs driven in. His brother, Matt, had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIS. Joseph Baker had a double among his three hits and drove in a run. Isaiah Pruitt used two hits to drive in three runs.

Jonny Tewinkle had a base hit and two RBIs for the Mountain Lions. Kade Carney finished with three hits.

ASU's bats didn't rest in the nightcap, and the Mountain Lions' bats didn't rest early in the game either. Both teams scored six runs in the first inning. The Grizzlies pushed over two runs in the seventh inning and held on for the doubleheader sweep.

Matt Bathauer had four hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs. Joseph Raker had a base hit and three RBIs. Nolan Marthaler had a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Seth Reker added two hits and knocked in two runs. Ayden Tauscher had two doubles.

CJ Pino was the winning pitcher. He picked up his first win of the season. Pino threw the second and third innings and struck out one batter.

Major Maydon and Aaron Morgan had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for CCU. Caden Walton added three hits.

Adams State opens up a weekend series by hosting New Mexico Highlands at 3 p.m. Friday, March 22.
