ALAMOSA, Colo. — Head Coach Bruce Del Tondo sat gazing across the sunlit ASU Baseball Field on Friday afternoon, his satisfaction palpable after the Grizzlies triumphed over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys, 9-6. With this victory, they achieved their fifth consecutive win, a feat last accomplished in the 2013-14 season, matching a program record.
"It's a refreshing feeling to be on this side of the game," Del Tondo remarked, a smile gracing his face. "Everything seems to have fallen into place over these past five games, and it's been nothing but fun."
Despite the Grizzlies being on short rest due to last week's weather disruptions, their momentum remained unwavering from the outset on Friday.
Taking the mound was the starting pitcher, Connor Murray delivered his finest performance of the spring. Over six innings, he faced 23 batters, conceding only one run on four hits and one walk, while recording eight strikeouts.
Adams State received solid relief appearances from CJ Pino and Zack Radigan, who each threw over 20 pitches an inning. Despite allowing a combined four runs, they managed to maintain control until Ty Addington took over on the mound.
Although the Cowboys threatened in the ninth inning, Addington secured the save, conceding only a single run on a sacrifice fly.
On the offensive front, both teams recorded 13 hits, but Mike Bathauer stood out with a flawless 4-for-4 performance at the plate, contributing two runs and an RBI. Three other Grizzlies added two runs each.
Adams State seized an early lead, scoring two runs in both the first and third innings, before exchanging runs with NMHU in the fourth. They added two more runs in the fifth inning, while the Cowboys rallied with three runs in the seventh.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies aim to establish a new program record for consecutive wins on Saturday as they prepare to face the Cowboys in a doubleheader scheduled to commence at noon.
