ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State softball team again saw treacherous innings but they overcame them as they split with the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls in Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) doubleheader.
After the games the Grizzlies have a 4-27 overall record and 2-20 RMAC Record.
GAME 1: ASU 10, NMHU 7
In a remarkable turnaround, the Grizzlies mounted a stunning comeback, scoring nine unanswered runs just when they seemed on the verge of being run-ruled, clinching the victory in the first game on Saturday.
Early in the game, both teams exchanged RBI-extra base hits.
Belinda Vargas ignited the scoring with a double to left center, driving in the game's opening run. The Cowgirls responded with an RBI triple, kickstarting a five-run surge in the top of the second inning, bolstered by another double, with no outs recorded.
Despite conceding two more runs in the top of the third, the Grizzlies displayed resilience, as
Mariah Madrid smashed an RBI double to left center, chipping away at the deficit.
The bottom of the fourth inning witnessed a momentum shift as the Grizzlies surged, adding three runs courtesy of a powerful three-run home run by
Makayla Veglia. They continued their rally in the fifth, clawing back another run with a sacrifice fly, narrowing the score to 7-6.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Grizzlies seized the opportunity to level the game, courtesy of a clutch double by
Krista Healy. Vargas then delivered the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded single through the left side.
Caylie Eiguren further cemented the Grizzlies' lead with a pivotal double to right center, driving in insurance runs.
Displaying offensive production, the Grizzlies notched 13 hits, including six extra-base hits.
Aubree Davis secured her third win of the campaign, despite yielding seven runs, six of which were earned, on seven hits and four walks.
GAME 2: NMHU 8, ASU 5
After squandering the lead with a run in the top of the first, Adams State came back and scored two in the bottom of the first.
The Cowgirls pushed across a run, thanks to an error, to tie the game, Adams State regained the lead on a sacrifice fly.
Adams State scored two more runs to pull within three at 8-5.
