SB| N.M. Highlands sweeps pair from Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – New Mexico Highlands brought the bats to its March 24 softball doubleheader at Adams State and came away with a sweep of the twin bill.
 
The scores were 11-10 and 14-8. The wins give NMHU a record of 11-16 overall and 7-15 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Grizzlies slipped to 4-29 and 2-21 in the conference.
 
Game 1: NMHU 11, ASU 10
The Cowgirls had a seven-run lead in the second inning before the Grizzlies' bats went to work. Kaja Bradford tripled home two runs in the second inning. Makayla Veglia's sacrifice fly scored one, and by the end of the inning, NMHU's lead was a narrow, 7-5.
 
Belinda Vargas' two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Grizzlies a 9-8 lead. But Highlands' Lexi Apodaca poked a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to give the Cowgirls the lead for good.
 
Carlee Gonzalez had three hits and two RBIs for Highlands. Angela Ramirez had two hits and drove in two runs for the Cowgirls. Heaven Medina drove in a pair of runs as well. Bradford finished with four hits and four RBIs for Adams State. Vargas chipped in with two base hits and three RBIs. Veglia had three RBIs.
 
Game 2: NMHU 14, ASU 8
The Grizzlies scored single runs in the first and second innings. Vargas hit her second home run of the day in the first frame. Caylie Eiguren's second-inning double scored Krista Healy. Highlands answered with a four-run third inning and tacked on three more in the fourth.
 
Both teams piled up 11 hits in the nightcap. NMHU's Karla Banegas had three of those hits and five of her team's RBIs. Jazmyn Griego added a pair of hits, two RBIs and four runs scored. Apodaca had a double and drove in three runs. Eiguren finished with three hits (two of which were doubles) and five RBIs. Sydney Rodriguez had a pair of singles and drove in a pair of runs.
 
The Grizzlies host Metropolitan State University of Denver for a Thursday, March 28, doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
