ALAMOSA, Colo. – In front of a packed Plachy Hall, adorned in white, the No. 3 seeded Adams State University women's basketball team etched their names into history on Tuesday night. Adams State triumphed in their 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) quarterfinal matchup against the No. 6-seeded Black Hills Yellow Jackets, securing a decisive 83-63 victory.
For the first time in program history, the Grizzlies have 24 wins in a single season, surpassing the previous record of 23 wins, established in 2010-11 and 1984-85. Riding a 10-game winning streak, Adams State stands at 24-7 overall. Now with a 3-8 record in RMAC Tournament games, they advance to the semifinals for the third time in program history.
Following this win, the Grizzlies are set to return to action on Friday as they journey to Denver to face the Regis Rangers in a rematch of the 2023 RMAC Tournament semifinal. Tip-off for the semifinal game is slated for 5:00 p.m.
The tournament's venue has shifted to Denver following a stunning upset in Grand Junction, where the No. 8 seeded CSU Pueblo overcame the No. 1 seeded Colorado Mesa with a score of 66-57. In another quarterfinal matchup, the No. 4 seeded UC-Colorado Springs defeated the fifth-seeded Colorado School of Mines, securing a 71-65 victory. The Mountain Lions and ThunderWolves will square off in the other semifinal showdown.
In Tuesday's game, Adams State and Black Hills engaged in a hard-fought battle in the opening quarter, with neither team establishing dominance, resulting in an 11-11 tie after the first frame. The second quarter witnessed a scoring spree as Adams State connected on 8-of-13 attempts from the field, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, outscoring BHSU 24-15 and taking a 35-26 lead at halftime.
The Grizzlies maintained their offensive momentum, converting 10 of 20 field goal attempts in the third quarter, further widening the gap. Adams State's defensive prowess shone through as they amassed 15 steals, with Angelline Nageak contributing four, leading to 22 turnovers forced.
Riri Davis matched her career-high of 21 points, a feat she had achieved twice earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Angelline Nageak led the scoring charge with 23 points. Harmanie Dominguez made history for the Grizzlies, setting a new season record by sinking a three-pointer in the third quarter. This brings her season total to 97 made three-pointers, surpassing ASU legend Vera Jo Bustos' previous mark of 96, set in 2010-11.
