ALAMOSA, Colo. – Enduring all the unpredictable elements of Colorado weather, the Adams State University baseball team completed a nine-inning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) game at the ASU Baseball Field. However, Mother Nature chose International Women's Day to make a grand entrance.
After a weather delay of 23 hours, Alamosa witnessed a new daily snow and precipitation record, with a total of 4.5 inches of snow on the ground and had to be cleared before play resumed on Saturday.
The Rangers broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly, but Adams State quickly responded with a bases-loaded walk by Mike Bathahuer to tie the game.
In the fourth inning, the Rangers regained the lead with two runs from singles, but Adams State answered back with three runs, also from singles. However, the fifth inning saw the Rangers take the lead once more, scoring two runs before the weather forced a halt to the game.
When play resumed on Saturday, the Rangers extended their lead to 7-4 by the bottom of the fifth inning.
Despite efforts from players like
Matt Bathauer, who delivered an RBI single, and
Phil Carter, who hit his third home run of the season, Adams State found themselves trailing 12-7 by the bottom of the eighth inning. A late rally, including a two-run stand-up double by
Mike Bathauer and a two-run home run by
Seth Reker, brought the score to 12-11 entering the ninth.
However, the Rangers shut down any hopes of a Grizzlies comeback, scoring six runs in the ninth inning on four hits to seal the victory.
Adams State managed to score 14 runs on 17 hits with no defensive errors, while the Rangers tallied 18 runs on 19 hits with two errors. The Grizzly pitchers issued seven walks, compared to the Rangers' five.
The series will conclude on Sunday with a tripleheader, starting at 10:00 a.m. The first two games will be seven innings each, while the finale will be a nine-inning affair.
