Grizzlies Dominate in Game One Against Mavericks

Alamosa, Colo. - The Adams State baseball team played their first  game of their four game series versus Colorado Mesa University on Thursday. The Grizzlies won big, 28-16, thanks to two huge innings, scoring 9 runs each. This game brings the Grizzlies to 22-23 on the season and 17-10 in RMAC play. This is the first time since 2016 the Grizzlies have defeated the Mavericks and the third time in all of their match ups.

Mesa was first on the board in the first inning scoring 4 runs, but the Grizzlies would score 2 runs themselves in the bottom of the inning. Mesa would then score 2 more runs in the second inning; however, Adams State would rally in the third inning, scoring 9 runs, outing them up 11-6. The Grizzlies would then score another run in the fourth inning. Mesa battled back in the fifth inning, scoring 4 runs, but the Grizzlies were still able to score another run in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth inning both teams kept the bats alive. Mesa scored 6 runs and the Grizzlies added 9 more runs to their total, essentially putting the game out of reach for Mesa. The Grizzlies would add 6 more runs in the final two innings, while shutting out Mesa. The game would end 28-16 after eight innings, in favor of the Grizzlies. 

The Grizzlies hit eight home runs on the day, led by Mike Bathauer who hit three home runs. He also went five for six on the day bringing in seven RBI's. His brother Matt Bathauer hit two home runs and was a perfect five for five at the plate while bringing in four RBI's. Phil Carter was four for six at the plate and also brought in seven RBI's while hitting two of the eight Grizzly home runs as the DH. Joey Raker also cranked one out to round out the eight home runs and brought in three RBI's on the day.

The Grizzlies had 28 runs on 28 hits from 50 at bats compared to Mesa's 16 runs on 17 hits and 42 at bats.

The Grizzlies will be back in action Friday starting at 12:00pm for their second and third games of their series against Colorado Mesa in Alamosa, Colo.
